THE JACK NEWTON PROFILE
Jack Newton was born in Cessnock, NSW Australia on January 30th 1950. Jack married wife Jackie in 1974 and has two children Kristie and Clint. He was one of Australia's most successful professional golfers. In many ways he was one of the trailblazers for Australian professional golf in both England and the USA. Newton includes the 1979 Australian Open championship in his impressive career record, as well as that "near miss" when beaten by Tom Watson in a play-off for the 1975 British Open. A long-hitting aggressive style of player, with a great short game and putting touch, Newton showed subsequent generations of Aussie golfers that we can take on the world and be competitive. Jack was a "no fuss" player who epitomised many of our great Australian traits of determination and being prepared to "have a go".
Jack's role in Junior golf
In July 1983 during the height of his professional career Jack had a near fatal aeroplane accident losing his right arm and eye and sustaining severe abdominal injuries.
After that unfortunate accident that ended his international playing career, Jack set out to make sure that young golfers in Australia would have access to support programs and receive opportunities to play that would guarantee Australia would continue to be competitive on the international stage.
Never a stranger to a scrap, and never one to put up with administrative interference, Newton has "put his money where his mouth is" by simply doing what had to be done to ensure junior golfers in NSW had the best chance to develop their golf careers.
Jack Newton & Channel 7
Golf fans in Australia and around the world know Jack Newton as the voice behind the microphone for major tournaments covered by the Channel Seven Network. Jack is a highly regarded commentator and is perfectly qualified to express opinions about the state of the game both on and off the course.
Jack is forthright in his opinions about golf and he is also able to provide great insights into the challenges faced by players during tournament play. He is highly respected by the players, and remains our best "teacher" on television.
Jack Newton - Newcastle, Horses, Golf
Always a competitor, Jack Newton still takes on all comers on the course. The handicaps may take a little negotiating, but watch out, because this man is a great judge of form and training - both in golf and on the horse track.
Jack & Jackie Newton are proud parents of Clint and Kristy, both successful athletes in their own right. Clint plays for the Newcastle Knights in rugby league, while Kristy has taken on the challenge of being the second generation of Newtons to take on the international golf world.
